Education

BS in Mathematics with Theoretical Option at Washington State University

Experience

I graduated from Washington State University in May 2012 with a B.S. in Theoretical Mathematics and a minor in Physics. Going through this difficult process with a wife and two young children, I recognize the challenges modern families face. Since graduating, I have started helping friends and other students with their studies, and found I have quite a knack for breaking down complex ideas and making them easy to understand. I thoroughly enjoy teaching, and I can honestly say that tutoring is just as much a hobby as it is serious work. I have frequently considered pursuing teaching as a future second career, and tutoring provides me the ability to do so on a one-to-one basis. I have tutored high school and college-level students on many subjects over the past several years, including: math prep for teaching certification, Algebra, Trigonometry, Calculus, and ASVAB/AFOQT prep. Beyond college education and prior tutoring experience, I have extensive real-life experience and training that I apply to teaching students both young and old. My career has provided me a wellspring of knowledge on public speaking, supervision, advising, and--most importantly--limitless faith in the powers of self-reliance and self-confidence. I spend a lot of time working with my twelve-year-old daughter and eight-year-old son, getting them excited about learning and actively engaged in discovery and exploration. I also have several years past experience as a Campfire Special Sitter, where I was educated and certified in caring for children with physical and mental disabilities. The most critical thing I learned from that experience is children with disabilities are still just children: they deserve the same care, attention, and respect of any child. If you convince a child of their own innovation and cleverness, they will never let you down. I'm a firm believer in empowerment of students. As the old "give a man a fish" proverb goes, my approach to education focuses on enabling the student to discover the answers for themselves. I like to be provided with details on what they're learning before each session so I can prepare a plan that reviews the material in a meaningful way, ensures they understand what they're being taught, and gives us an opportunity to work out the problems together until THEY are satisfied they have learned what they came to learn. I've found these principles are just as effective with college students as they are with grade school children. While regular clients are nice, I believe it should be the goal of every tutor to build students up to the point where tutoring is no longer necessary. I truly look forward to getting you or your students actively engaged in learning, and providing you with the tools necessary to succeed well after our sessions have concluded.

Hobbies

As a math major, it will come as no surprise that I'm a nerd at heart, but I also have a healthy appreciation for getting outside and enjoying the fresh air. I love a good book and enjoy playing video games with my kids, but I also enjoy snorkeling and hiking.
