Experience

I currently work part-time (by choice) as a therapeutic skills trainer. I work with children with special needs that fall under the per-view of 504 or IDEA student status. I have had experience in this field since 2012. Typical one to one cases range from acute to severe ASD to behavioral cases (ex, ADHD and ODD). In addition to my experience, I am also working on higher level credentials such as a BCaBA (Board Certified Assistant Behavioral Analyst) Relevant Courses • Developmental Psychology • Abnormal Psychology • Counseling Psychology • Learning and Behavior Why consider me? I want to be a tutor because I like what I do but there is a certain type of fulfillment in teaching, like what I do with skills training. I am a firm Believer of Vygotsky’s scaffolding theory definition and ZPD (Zone of Proximal Development). Me as a tutor is not just give answers but guide the student so they can not only get the right answer but understand why they are correct to embed a higher level of comprehension. It takes a very special person to work in school a setting with the typical cases I encounter. The field of being a skills trainer is a very challenging profession. The profession has a very high attrition rate (approximately) 50% quit before the first year. It takes patience and persistence and an understanding personality. Being a part-time skills trainer I have to quickly connect with the clients. For example, if the client likes certain video games, movies, or sports. Me as a skills trainer can use that to find common ground and slowly build a relationship. Speaking from experience, having common ground has a tremendous effect on the tutor-client relationship and makes it easier for the tutor to redirect effort back to the task at hand. Remember: Successive approximations to a desired result. It takes time but with time and proper nurturing comes unimaginable results. Aside from working with children with special needs, I have helped adults with classes in Psychology, History. In addition, I have professional license such as the Hawaii State Life Producers Exam (Life Insurance License Exam) which I have help persons successfully pass on their first attempt. NOTE: Children are my specialty but I can also tutor adults as well on undergraduate level courses
