Experience
I have over 30 years experience teaching students to write. I have taught students at all levels, from beginners to very advanced. I have taught ESL students and native English speakers. This experience includes a lot of tutoring, in addition to classroom teaching. My approach to tutoring writing is student centered. Eeach student has strengths and things he or she needs to work on. I am very good at analyzing each student's writing and providing positive nonjudgmental feedback. Further, I teach each student how to gain more confidence as a writer, as well as how to process writing through prewriting activities, drafting, revising, and editing. I am very good at grammar and can teach it competently, but I also ask students to focus on preparing to write, drafting, and especially how to revise writing. I have also taught classes and tutored students on how to give public speeches. I can teach shy students how to gain confidence, as well as teach students how to structure a speech, create attractive overhead slides, and communicate with the audience. I have also prepared individual students to improve his or her TOEFL scores. We work on reading faster with more comprehension, listening, writing, and grammar. I would like to highlight that I have taught students (both tutored and in classrooms) from all over the world. I lived abroad (in Thailand for 6 years, Japan for 4, Korea for 4), as well as taught university ESL students and native English speakers in the US for 22 years. Why do I want to be a tutor? In short, I love to see students learn. I love to see students gain confidence and do well in school and in life. I have a great amount of experience as a professor, classroom teacher and tutor. I sincerely want to use this experience to help students to learn. What else can I add? I was a tenured full professor at Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP), where I directed the MA TESOL Program and later the Ph.D. program in Composition & TESOL. After retiring from IUP, I was awarded professor emeritus status. I received a number of awards, including English Language Specialist awards from the Department of State to teach students in Hungary, Croatia and Indonesia. I was also an exchange professor in Japan (twice) and China. In my younger days, I taught English majors at Thammasat University (listening-speaking, writing, public speaking) in Thailand for two years, as well worked as a cross-cultural trainer for Mitsubishi Corporation in Tokyo. After retiring from my tenured professorship in the US, I accepted a tenured position at Pusan National University in South Korea where I taught undergraduate and graduate English Education majors. I can add that I am an experienced writer and have published five books and many many academic articles in professional journals and chapters in edited books. In addition, I am an experienced public speaker, having delivered many lectures to large auditorium auditorium audiences at conferences, as well as talks to smaller audiences. I truly understand what it means to develop writing and public speaking skills, including overcoming how to accept feedback and overcoming shyness in speaking in public!
